10 Things to Do in Los Angeles That Are Actually Worth Your Time

Los Angeles has a reputation problem.

Everyone thinks they know it – sunshine, traffic, fake people, overpriced avocado toast.

Some of that is fair. But LA is also one of the most genuinely interesting cities in the US, and most visitors barely scratch the surface.

Here’s what’s actually worth your time.

1. Hike to the Hollywood Sign

Yeah, it’s touristy. Do it anyway.

The hike up takes about 1.5-2 hours round trip from Griffith Park, and the views from the trail are seriously impressive.

Go early – like, 7am early. By 10am the trail fills up fast and parking becomes a nightmare.

You won’t get right up to the letters – there’s fencing about 50 feet out. The view of the sign against the hills with the whole city sprawled below it is the shot you came for anyway.

2. Griffith Observatory

Free to enter, sitting up in the hills above Los Feliz, with some of the best unobstructed views of both the Hollywood Sign and the LA skyline you’ll find anywhere.

The Planetarium show costs $10 and is genuinely worth it. The rooftop terrace? Completely free.

Go at sunset. The light hitting the city from up there is something else.

3. Venice Beach

Venice Beach is part beach, part circus, part open-air gym, part art gallery.

Walk the boardwalk and you’ll see bodybuilders at Muscle Beach, street performers, fortune tellers, roller skaters, and at least one person doing something genuinely baffling.

Don’t try to rush it – the vibe is the whole point.

Grab food from one of the spots along the boardwalk and just watch the chaos unfold.

4. Santa Monica Pier and Beach

The pier is touristy and the rides are overpriced, but the beach itself is genuinely beautiful.

Rent a bike and ride the beach path south toward Venice – one of the most classic LA experiences you can have, and it costs about $15.

Parking is brutal on weekends. Get there before 9am or take the Metro E Line directly to the pier.

5. In-N-Out Burger

Classic American cheeseburger with fries

This is not optional.

In-N-Out is cheap, fast, and genuinely excellent in a way that will make you question every burger you’ve had at home.

Order the Double-Double, Animal Style. If you don’t know what Animal Style means, ask – the cashier has answered this question 400 times today and genuinely does not mind.

The Animal Style fries are also mandatory. This is basically the law.

6. The Getty Center

Free to enter – you just pay for parking ($25) or take the free shuttle from a nearby bus stop.

The building alone is worth the trip. Richard Meier designed it, it sits on a hilltop above Brentwood, and on a clear day you can see the Pacific Ocean from the terrace.

The art collection covers Impressionism, illuminated manuscripts, ancient decorative arts, contemporary photography. Pick one wing and go deep rather than rushing through everything.

Budget at least 2-3 hours. You’ll need them.

7. Runyon Canyon Hike

Runyon Canyon is Hollywood’s hiking trail – which means the views are great and the people-watching is even better.

The main loop is about 3.5 miles with real elevation gain, and views from the top take in the Hollywood Sign, Griffith Observatory, and the full LA basin on a clear day.

Dogs are allowed off-leash on most of the trail, so you’ll be sharing the path with approximately 1,000 very happy dogs the entire time.

Bring water. More water than you think you need.

8. Drive Pacific Coast Highway

Rent a car and drive PCH north from Santa Monica toward Malibu.

Pacific on one side, Santa Monica Mountains on the other, the road threading between them – it’s one of the great American drives and it costs nothing but gas.

Stop at El Matador State Beach in Malibu. It’s tucked below the cliffs, requires a 100-step descent, and the sea stacks and rock formations down there are absolutely stunning.

The earlier you go, the fewer people you’ll share it with.

9. Grand Central Market

Downtown LA, open since 1917, and one of the best food halls in the country.

Tacos, egg sandwiches, Vietnamese, Thai, oysters, fresh juice – all under one roof, most of it under $15 a dish.

Go hungry and go with no plan. Try 3-4 different spots.

IMO this is the single best hour you can spend in downtown LA, full stop.

10. Koreatown After Dark

Koreatown is a neighborhood that doesn’t really come alive until after 9pm.

Korean BBQ, soju towers, and karaoke until 2am – this is what LA nightlife looks like when you skip the overpriced Hollywood clubs.

Hit Park’s BBQ or Quarters Korean BBQ for a proper KBBQ experience. Order the short ribs (galbi) and let the server grill them tableside.

Come hungry, come in a group, and block off the whole night. You’re going to be here for a while. 🙂

Los Angeles rewards the curious and punishes the lazy.

Stick to Hollywood Boulevard and Rodeo Drive and you’ll leave thinking it was overrated.

Hit half the things on this list and you’ll be looking up flights back before you’ve even unpacked at home.
