Austin doesn’t need your validation. It’s already the Live Music Capital of the World, the fastest-growing city in America, and the undisputed king of keeping things weird.
But all that hype means you could also spend your whole trip bouncing between overrated tourist traps. We’re here to make sure that doesn’t happen.
Here’s what’s actually worth your time in ATX.
1. Catch a Live Show on Sixth Street

On any given night, Sixth Street is basically a real-life Choose Your Own Adventure of live music.
Country, blues, indie, electronic – the bars don’t close until 2am and the bands don’t slow down until everyone goes home. No cover charges on most spots. Just show up and wander.
Pro tip: Rainey Street is the mellower, craft cocktail version of the same vibe – both are worth a night each.
2. Visit the Texas State Capitol

Yes it’s a government building, but hear us out. The Texas State Capitol is taller than the US Capitol in DC. Texas was a whole separate country before joining the US. The building is proud of this and so is everyone in it.
Free tours run daily. The grounds are massive and shaded, perfect for a slow walk before lunch.
3. Swim at Barton Springs Pool

Austin summers are genuinely brutal – we’re talking 100+ degree days that make you question every life decision. Barton Springs Pool is the answer.
This is a natural spring-fed pool inside Zilker Park, and the water stays at a cool 68 degrees year round. Locals treat it like a religion. Small admission fee, worth every penny.
4. Kayak or Paddleboard Lady Bird Lake

Lady Bird Lake sits right in the heart of Austin, with the downtown skyline towering over you on one side and miles of green trail on the other.
Rent a kayak, paddleboard, or canoe and get out on the water. The hike-and-bike trail around the lake is also one of the best urban walking paths in the country.
5. Eat Texas BBQ (Real Texas BBQ)

If you’re not eating brisket in Austin, you’re doing it wrong. Franklin Barbecue is the legendary name – yes you might wait 2 hours in line, yes it’s actually worth it.
Not willing to wait? La Barbecue and Micklethwait Craft Meats are legit alternatives. Get the brisket, the sausage, and at least one side of jalapeño cheese grits. You’re welcome.
6. Explore South Congress Avenue

South Congress, or SoCo as locals call it, is the beating heart of Austin’s weird, eclectic, slightly hipster energy.
Vintage shops, local boutiques, murals, taco joints, rooftop bars, and some of the best people-watching in Texas. The famous “I Love You So Much” mural on the side of Jo’s Coffee is worth the Instagram moment. No shame.
7. Hit the Austin Food Truck Scene

Austin basically invented the concept of making food truck dining a whole cultural event. “Trailer parks” (clusters of food trucks around a bar) are everywhere, and they’re genuinely excellent.
East 6th Street has some of the best clusters. Try tacos at Veracruz All Natural, Thai at Dee Dee, or whatever weird fusion thing just opened – it’ll probably slap.
8. Experience Rainey Street

A few years ago, Rainey Street was a quiet residential block of old bungalows. Now those bungalows are craft cocktail bars with dog-friendly patios and impossibly good happy hour specials.
It’s more relaxed than Sixth Street – less college chaos, more “I make good money and appreciate a well-made negroni.” Hit Banger’s Sausage House for the beer selection, Container Bar for the view.
9. Catch a Show at ACL Live or Stubb’s

Austin City Limits is the longest-running music TV show in American history and it films right here. ACL Live at the Moody Center hosts intimate shows. Stubb’s Amphitheatre is an outdoor venue that genuinely feels like a movie set.
Check the schedule before you arrive. There’s almost always something on worth seeing, from national touring acts to local legends who’ve been playing here since before you were born.

10. Hike the Barton Creek Greenbelt

Right inside the city limits, Barton Creek Greenbelt is 12 miles of trails through limestone canyons, spring-fed swimming holes, and actual Texas wilderness.
It sounds too good to be true. It’s not. Download AllTrails before you go, bring plenty of water, and don’t try the harder climbs in flip flops. People do it every weekend. They’re wrong.
Austin is a city that rewards the curious and punishes the lazy tourist. Skip the overpriced tourist shops, spend your money on brisket instead, and whatever you do – keep Austin weird.
